NGC - Coin of the Day: On this day in 1862, the Battle of Antietam took place in Maryland, about 50 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. The Civil War engagement remains the bloodiest day in US history. Five days after the Union victory, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This 1937 Antietam Half Dollar Commemorative marked 75 years since the pivotal battle.
