One of the biggest selection of 1948 Silver Dollars I have seen in a auction. You have a wide range of conditions to choose from. From EF-40 to MS-62.

Having been a dealer in Canada for a long while, 48 Dollars are not rare, TBH - I used to get offered examples at least once every 1.5 months as they were recognized at the time as a rarity, and thusly have virtually all survived... this being said, top grade, unmolested examples are tough. This would not be the first time that I have heard of someone hoarding a well known key date, I have seen the same with Wreath Crowns in the UK, and Talars in Poland. Looks to me like someone with an obsession / mission.

Yes, I do find it funny/ strange that the rarest $silver is so easily found.

Johnny said it all in the post above mine. In the past, any relatively large coin show in the T.O area would have 4-5 of them on the bourse and they weren't the same ones from show to show. The '48's were hoarded from the get-go because of the small mintage so most were all kept. You dodn't see any '48's melted for scrap the way every other one was. They retain much of their premium only because they have been written about for 70 years.

One of our coin club members related the story of how he got a roll of 20 from the bank at face value!

However, this was 1948, and I recall that he was pestering them all year and they finally came in late in the year.

So yes, from the beginning they were never easy to find.

At one of the GTA large shows a few years ago, a dealer was selling a first copy of the CCN paper, the last page was a dealer offering 200.00 for a unc 48 dollar. Almost everyone knew the 48 was a small mintage even back then, although far from the same % of mintage the 20012 pre security loonies and toonies are horded, at shows most goes for 10 bucks. My understanding is the 20 1948 dollars that was up for auction was latter private treaty.

Based on the sales prices from the Colonial auction, there is still strong demand for them.

Lets face it... it is not really the rarity.. it is that it is missing in most collections as a it is a
MONEY coin....not exactly the lowest price dollar... right?
There are considerably fewer of the 1947 Pointed 7 around than 48's. Never mind the 47P7's dots...
and not to mention the ML's, which are actually 1948s
personally? I buy them at MY price because I know I can make money on them should I ever decide to sell...!

You can go to any major coin show in various Canadian cities and find 7-8 of them in dealer's cases. As 47P7 says, they are far from rare, but have been collectible for decades.
