As most of you know, I collect world coins by theme; cats. Kittens, cats, lions, tigers, jaguars, mythical beasts and tokens. This weekend we had a local show with maybe 20 dealers, and I picked up a few coins I was very pleased to find. I also threw a few coins in that I've had for a few months, just because I like them and wanted to share them with you. Exhibit A: Guatemala 1/4 silver Real, 1868. A very tiny coin with a crowned lion on the obverse. Exhibit B; Rhodesia & Nyasaland 6 pence, 1957. A lovely toned coin that looks uncirculated to me. It is replacing another 1957 6 pence that had some black stains below the rock the cat stands upon. Exhibit C; Paraguay 1/12 real, 1845. A friend in Belgium helped me acquire this coin from ebay France. (Yay for Yahoo.Babelfish!) Exhibit D; Isle of Man 25 cents Crown-sized coin, 1975. Exhibit E; Mali 25 Frances, 1961. (A lovely set actually, with the hippo and horse on the 5 and 10 franc coins, too.) Exhibit F; Spanish Copper Cob coin, 8 Maravedi. Mint NR, Nuevo Reina (Bogota, Colombia.) Exhibit G; Great Britain, 1 shilling 1826. Thank you Numismatty! Exhibit H; Mongolia 25 tugrik, 1987. World Wildlife Commemorative featuring the Snow Leopard.

That's a great selection of felines...I really like Guatemala coin and how the 1/4 barely fits in there. The reverse on the 1826 UK Shilling looks like the dream of every house cat.

G'day, felines, large or small, are not indigenous to Oz, but cats were the first species introduced to Australia after settlement 1788, or perhaps more accurately, one cat.
Lions have appeared on the following Australian coins: C.of A. florins 1938~64 Commemorative florin 1954 decimal 50-cents, 1966; C.of A. 50-cents 1969~present; note special C.of A. in 2001
Can't think of any other Oz commemoratives with felines, but I may have to stand corrected on that.
I admire people who collect by theme: you have to be willing to do lots of research, and to keep an open mind at all times.

Very nice ElleKitty. I noticed there are a few countries that use the lion or tiger as their emblem as such as the UK, Netherlands,Finland, former Czechoslovakia, Singapore and so on. Here are some that I found while going though my collection: Belgium 1902 2 cents Czechoslovakia 1929 5 korun Finland 1921 10 pennia Netherlands 1957 1 guilder And finally this commemorative coin from Singapore: Singapore 1986 10 dollars This is awesome as the Chinese Zodiac commemorates the Year of Tiger and the Singapore emblem features both a tiger and lion. Can't beat that. Hong Kong 1 dollar Israel 1979 1 lirot

Ooooohh... gxseries, I've never seen the Singapore 10 dollar coin before. That's one I'm going to have to track down if it's a reasonable purchase! I have just over 32 coins pulled out of the regular collections featuring cats not including the Isle of Mans cat crown series. I think I'll list them here, and then anyone who knows of other coins with cats (as the main theme, or a major element) might list them here if they would. I would be very thankful. I won't put pictures with all of them, because I know some forum members are on dialup and there's nothing worse than a long picture thread that won't load. The curiousity kills me! Yes you are, you snarky thing you. I saw that coin, and I very nearly sent a PM; but I just can't afford to spend money on my fixation right now. I'm out of work for at least a month, and only getting 60% of my pay for Short Term Disability. If Matt still has the coin by the time I'm getting money in again, I will most assuredly be delighted to add it to the Kitty Collection.

There's a very rare commemorative from France that has two cats on the reverse, statues of the Egyptian goddess Bastet. I've never seen one except in photos, it's a very low mintage, but if anyone sees one... Bastet means "Devouring Lady", but this goddess was initially considered a protector of cats and of those who kept them. Later on she became the goddess of joy and protector of women. To top it off, she's a daughter of Ra! As to why she appears in duplicate on the reverse of a coin commemorating French author Malraux, well, that's a topic for later post... This picture is from a Paris-based dealer's website, and shows the pre-series 'trial' version (essai).
