Hi all, this is my moms husbands coin (not dad, it's complicated...). He's been holding this coin since he was a kid. I believe this one is definitely a grading candidate, given the condition, year, and mint mark, but wanted to get some sage opinions on what grade we could expect. I see some issues under the wing on the back. These are the best photos I'll be able to get. Enjoy!

I see I accidentally put this in the general classic coin forum, could a moderator help move this to the grading forum please? Apologies....

Firstly, the coin has been polished within an inch of its life. That harsh of a cleaning will kill off a lot of the value of this coin unfortunately. The detail of the coin places it in the AU range, had it not been cleaned the value would have sat at around $220. Due to the cleaning it would likely fetch a fraction of that. Personally I'd place the market value of this coin at around $100, though it may go as high as $120. Generally lightly cleaned coins on CC coins can sell without a significant issue, but when its to this degree it will either not sell at all, or at a significant discount.

I will most certainly agree with Grape. AU Details, polished/altered surfaces.

Yeah if it was polished it was back in the 1940s or 50s by his grandmother, which sounds like a grandma kind of thing to do.... unfortunate! He has several other Morgan's that are supposedly in good shape, they're about 1,000 miles from me so just kind of looking into this stuff with them remotely. Still a cool coin, but probably tough for these types of coins to have survived 1950s silver polishing.
Rest in Peace

Why not polish that tarnished dollar when taking care of the fine silver flatware....ouch...

This got me doing some more research on how to recognize polished surfaces vs mint luster, so I did a side by side of my own polished/cleaned Morgan, next to a Peace dollar that has mint luster. I see now the lines that catch the light and pull light to the center on the original luster. Thought I'd post a picture for newbies like myself that are learning to recognize it. Point taken, shiny doesn't mean it's mint luster!

And if I'm way off here in how I'm looking at it, please correct me now.
