I recently bought the American Buffalo Gold Fractional Coins (the Proofs).

Boy, those 1/10 Oz. Uncirculated ones disappeared fast (even from the Denver Mint Gift Shop!) and now the Proof 1/10 Oz.'s are gone too....

The rate at which these are starting to disappear strongly suggests that the Buffalo Fractionals will be (by far!) the most 'protested' of all the recent U.S. Mint product discontinuations!

I have a suspicion that the Buffalo Fractionals may come back as 'bullion' coins, no mintmark and sold through the bullion dealer network. Two of the local authorized Mint bullion dealers agreed that this would make sense, for several reasons. It would also keep the 2008 'Collector' versions unique.

Just when I was finally ready to get that 2001 Buffalo Silver Dollar (or pair of same) in my collection (you know, the one that's on my avatar here!), the Mint had to go and pull the Buffalo Fractionals!

Oh well!

The only thing I read about the elimination of the Buffalo Bullion, is the mint decided to discontinue the Proof and W Uncirculated.

I assume the Bullion coins sold through dealers will remain. Don't quote me on it if I'm wrong.

All Buffalo fractionals have been discontinued. For 2009 the only Buffalo gold available will be one ounce proofs.

I agree with DNA that the demand for fractional Buffalos may bring reinstatement of this series in the future.

But I don't believe the fractionals were issued as bullion coins through the authorized dealers, they were direct order only and they are now discontinued.

I was under the same impression, that the Mint was to continue the release of the bullion buffalo fractionals, just discontinue the Proof & Uncirculated versions

There were no 'bullion' Fractional Gold Buffalos. The only 'bullion' Gold Buffalo (since its debut in 2006) is the one-ounce gold coin.
The Fractional Gold coins sold as bullion are American Eagles.

I would have gladly bought 'bullion' Fractional Gold Buffalos if they had been made, because the Buffalos are 24K Gold as opposed to the 22K Gold Eagles. I don't think the 'softness' of 24K is a liability anyway, no one's carrying any of these coins 'raw' in their pocket!

It appears that even the Fractional Gold Eagle bullion coins and the Gold Buffalo one-ounce bullion coin will be delayed for 2009.
If the Mint can't get blanks, then they might not be able to issue Fractional bullion Buffalos even if they wanted to (and I for one would bet that they've at least seriously considered that idea!)

I may have missed my opportunity to get the 2001 Buffalo Silver Dollar at the original issue price , but the opportunity that I didn't miss (the Fractional Buffalo Proofs) may end up being the better of the two! After all, if gold hits $1,085/Oz. (a very reasonable 'target'), the four-coin Proof set will be worth its issue price in 'melt value' alone! (it is 1.85 Troy Oz. of 24K Gold, after all!)

L1011 "Did you mean the Mint never sold fractional buffs?"

I hope not, because they sold a Proof Set to me!

What I said was is that the Fractional-sized Buffalos were not sold as bullion coins, that is with no mintmark and through the Mint's bullion resale network. The only bullion (no mintmark) Buffalo has been the 1-oz. coin, sold in this manner since 2006. The Mint does sell Fractional-sized Gold Eagle coins in bullion versions, but they never did this with the Fractional Gold Buffalos.

Some people were apparently thinking that there were Buffalo Fractional bullion coins, but that was not the case.

The 2008 Fractional Buffalos were sold only direct from the U.S. Mint as 'collector' coins, meaning that all Fractional-sized Buffalos had "W" Mintmarks (in either 'Uncirculated' or 'Proof' versions).

What I was suspecting in my first post is that the Mint may re-issue
the Fractional Buffalos at some future date as 'bullion' coins, as opposed to the 2008-only 'collector' issues.
