I have a question regarding 1922 Lincoln cents "without D" and "weak D". I've noted that with these coins the second "2" in the date 1922 is typically strong/stronger and also appears to look different in style and placement from the first "2". My question is, was the second "2" repunched on the dies and someone forgot to repunch the "D"? Or, did the mint simply always use a "192-" hub and then add the last digit? I've noticed that in the 1921 Lincoln Cent the second "1" doesn't look like the first "1".

The D was punched, but then ground off later.

Any reply is purely a guess. Remember your asking about what may or may not have happened almost 100 years ago.

Just carl, the 1922 no D wasn't just discovered. I'm not sure exactly when it was discovered, but it was well over 50 years ago. If someone knows, please post the information. For sure, there were people still alive when it was discovered that had worked at the Denver mint. In addition, the polishing of the die is reflected in the coins that were minted.

I believe the varying strength of the 2s is due to the uneven nature of the die polishing that also removed the mintmark. I don't think any repunching of the date was involved.

I agree, to the best of recollection anyway. I need to find a reference post.

Nothing I have ever read suggests anything other than polishing off the MM and variations are a result of that.
