Just damage. Looks kind of like some kind of heavy 'wheel' rolled onto the coin's rim.

Thanks, how do the random letters get deposited along the damaged edge? Are they coming through from the opposite side or did it picked that up from whatever it?

@chicago, I do see some bumps in the flattened area, from abotu 3 to 6 o'clock on the obverse. Whatever flattened this coin out had some surface texture which allowed some of the displaced metal to end up proud.
