I have a few questions and appreciate any help ..Is the correct term for discolored spot a die error? And is this one on the back of this 1974 D us penny? Please and Thank you!
No, a discolouration is not called a die error. What you have is some sort of stain or foreign substance on your coin. No "official" name for it. Can you tell if the spot might be glue? (Is the spot raised on it?)
No it is not raised or bumpy just smooth or normal its just discolored on that one spot thank you I'm new to this and still learning terminology. Its appreciated.
Believe the official term for this is having a piece of foil stuck to the coin. Probably gunked on there with some nasty sticky substance it encountered in the pretty degrading existence of a penny.
A die error (AKA a die event or variety) would not affect the color of the coin, only the appearance of the of the image struck on it.
