I have a couple of Engelhard silver bars I purchased that I can't seem to identify. The person who brought them in said their grandfather collected them and that these were "rare" as far as they knew. They certainly look different, especially what I call the "Mickey Mouse" next to the logo.

Any help identifying these and/or determining if they are old/rare, etc. would be appreciated.

Both are 10 oz bars, and both are hand-poured, but that's all I know.

Hi from what I can gather from a simple google is no engelhard is rare , no such beast.
100oz bars are prefered size for trading and resell and are favoured but its only ever going to be a case of weigh it and price it.
I did read that the poured bars are not in favor but that was one guys opinion ,silvers silver I would have thought.
I have an engelhard prospecter oz and its an interesting read , just google engelhard.

Engelhard is a very popular name among bullion hoarders/collectors. That and Johnson Matthey is another good brand. Engelhards sell for a good price on ebay and usually at B&M stores, Engelhards go for a premium like American Silver Eagles.

The 10 oz bar you have is kind of rare in that you don't see it too often however if you check ebay, you will find a few for sale quite often. Even rarer engelhards are the 3, 4, 5, and 7 oz bars. You've got a nice bar, I like the old style hand poured bars.

Hope that helps.

goldandsilverbuyer, how much did you pay for the bars? Even though the Kitco charts say silver is around $10, that is not the case when you try and actually try and buy physical silver.

I'm in the business of gold and silver, so I often get good deals - this was no exception. I'm really familiar with Engelhard and have many bars, but I've never seen one like this without a letter before the number, or with the symbol next to the "E" in Engelhard. I was told that this was from one of their first pours ever by another collector, but can't find any information on the internet to verify. I thought one of the collectors/experts on this forum might know.

As to the question of price, as everyone knows, you can't touch physical silver for the spot price, and don't even try to take delivery from Comex because you won't get it!

I've been fortunate to have silver from my refining business and have been selling it for $3/ozt over spot, but that is in limited quantities - a couple thousand ounces a week. Beyond that, it's getting very hard to find.

Thanks for the responses and if anyone knows anything more, especially about the symbol, please let me know.

I have not come across any websites talking about old engelhard bars or silver bars in general.

I would say, try doing a search on ebay. Sometimes there are people selling engelhard bars on ebay that may know some more history on it.

The little micky mouse logo that you call was used in many early engelhard bars that I have seen. However, I have seen some bars without the mickey mouse logo and those without it may be the earliest.

You actually know what? The symbol is very close to the alchemical symbol for platinum (the moon and the sun combined, representing silver and gold).

I would think it's one of the first bars made by Engel, but could it also be because it's platinum?

Anyways, here's proof for the platinum alchemical symbol

I think if it's in fact platinum, you should give the guy the full price!

And oh... to the forums!

wd1040, that would be crazy if it was platinum, imagine buying plat at the same price as silver!

I double checked some pics I stored on my computer of various engelhard and other silver bullion pictures.

I think the earliest engelhard hand poured bars did not have the mickey mouse logo.
