I thought it would be interesting to see the differences between the original and unofficial restrike of this coin. As DL20K pointed out below, the restrike appears to be more valuable. The coin on the left the 1918 civil war 5 pennia (mintage 35,000), and on the right is the reverse of a restrike made in Germany in the 20s. There are major differences seen in the size of leaves on the wreath, shape of the horns, and the date which might otherwise be missed because it has a similar period "look". photo of fake by Juhan M.

Thanks for pointing that out, I would have missed it.

I'd know it, since I remember that in my ancient Krause, both coins are pictured.
What makes me wonder - why did the Germans produce fakes back then? Was it already a valuable coin in the 1920s?

DL, I was wondering the same thing--why would someone in Germany bother to make a fairly close copy? I would think Germany had other problems in the 1920s, and few were buying scarce coins? I got that bit of info from a collector in Finland, and I have not read it anywhere else--my Krause does not list the copy. If anyone has more info, that would sure be interesting!

"This type was unofficially struck outside of Finland in the early 1920's."
Quote from old Krause. Later, the coin was moved to the "Unusual World Coins" book.

Interesting...thanks for that info! Since it commemorates their independence from Russia, perhaps the restrike is a commemorative--and not an outright forgery. (words say something like: "Work of the People, Power of the People") I want to find the original, does Krause list a value on the copy?

Yep, in the old Krause, both types have their values listed.

Kurt,
Not sure how it was listed in the old Krause; in the Unusual World Coins it's listed with no values, with the following information:
X# B1 Denomination 5 Pennia Country Finland Government Grand Duchy Coinage Type Civil War Coinage (Liberated Finnish Government Issue) Composition Copper Weight 2.5 g Diameter 17.9 mm Description Obverse 3 trumpets Description Reverse Large value, wreath knot above second 1 in 1918 Legend Obverse • KANSAN TYÖ, KANSAN VALTA • - SUOMI - FINLAND This variety was unofficially struck outside of Finland in the early 1920's. Prev. KM#21.2. DL20K, what were the values listed in the old Krause?

By the way, thanks for posting this Kurt.. things like this are always good to keep notes on It's close enough that it could fool someone just running through trying to classify their world coinage, and if they weren't an expert on this particular country..

Xshift, thanks for the info! That must apply to the restrike, because I understood the official coin was struck in Finland, while the other obviously was not. The site in Finland names Germany...interesting.

Back then, the prices were stated as follows:
(F-VF-XF-UNC) Original: 15.00 25.00 35.00 60.00 Restrike: 40.00 60.00 100.00 150.00

The restrikes are worth more? Well, so much for my concerns lol...at least I documented the differences. I'll have to rewrite this piece.

Yes, there's no mistake, the restrike was priced higher in the old Krause. But now, since it's no longer there, its price might be somewhat lower.

Addendum: NGC has apparently taken to adding the spec. "Knot Centered", and I'm wondering if that is their way to distinguish between original and restrikes: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...310164354912[I found this old ebay sale while looking for information about this coin. In particular I was wondering how accurate the Krause values are. (That's also when I found this thread!)]

That's interesting...I wonder what they mean by "knot" Perhaps it's the flower mark between SUOMI and 1918? That's to the left on the original, and centered on the restrike. Good marker!
