Obviously as a collector you are meant to keep anything odd looking at least until identification or evaluation is complete and I was about to place this on 'the auction website' just now until I started thinking about exactly what it was for. When I first got this I put it down as some sort of of farming token (I knew 'dyr' was a Scandinavian type word for animal) but just now I came to thinking exactly what could it be used for? So I did the usual search with Google and found the Wiki entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyrehavsbakken Quote:
Dyrehavsbakken (English, "The Deer Park Hill"), referred to informally as Bakken ("The Hill"), is the world's oldest intact still-surviving amusement park. It is located in Klampenborg (Gentofte municipality), Denmark.
It started modestly when Kirsten Piil, in 1583 discovered a natural spring in the area north of Copenhagen. Locals took tours to the natural spring to drink the good tasting, fresh water, which was in short supply in Copenhagen, and to take advantage of its health-bringing properties. In their wake followed enterprising individuals who took financial advantage of the visiting crowds by offering, among other products and services, food and pottery in which to collect the water.
The forest area in which Bakken lies is now known as Dyrehaven, and is state-owned. Dyrehaven, which translates literally from Danish as "The Animal Garden", was fenced in 1669 by order of King Frederik III, and became a royal hunting ground. This area is also known as Jęgersborg Dyrehave ("Jęgersborg Deer Garden"). It was made into the first amusement park, complete with rides, games, and restaurants, by King Christian IV of Denmark. Note that since "dyr" in Danish can mean both deer and animal in general, the park is referenced as both "The Animal Garden" and "The Deer Park". Looks like I have a little 'keeper' in this - a token that comes from the world's oldest amusement park (another website gives 1583 as the date for its opening), "The Animal Garden". Although it probably doesn't have much value, it is a nice little piece of history and quite unusual... Edited by NumisMattyUk 11/28/2008 06:13 am

Hah...it's probably not that rare I just found it quite fascinating to discover it has some sort of significance instead of being just another ordinary piece.

That's a very nice piece of research! Have you estimated a date on the token? I have also seen these in bronze without the center hole. The token looks more modern than 1885 to me, and judging by style I might guess 1930s-50s. I've also read these were valid for 25 ore; one source calls it an arcade token.

Great info - why did they date them 1885? or is this not a date Also, what does teltholderforeningen mean? I can't get that one translated. I was beginning to wonder how many types of these there might be -I bet there would be about a handful of Danish collectors collecting these!

Quote: Also, what does teltholderforeningen mean? I think the token ran two words "teltholder foreningen" together. Someone who speaks Danish can comment better, but it I think it translates to "Tentkeepers Association".

Vereniging is Dutch for association, so foreningen does sound right. Along with Legoland and the Tivoli Gardens, this is what makes the country of Denmark such an interesting place. Don't forget the used to have Vikings too! Quote:Danish arcade token -23mm. Confirmation thanks to Lennart Fredericksen: It is a 25 ore play money for a slot machine from "Bakken". 1885 is the date the company started. Magnetic (scarcer) and non-magnetic varieties. http://www.thelastcall.dk/~erikoest...gDyrehave_DKJęgersborg Deer Park with Bakken (Dyrehavsbakken), on the island of Zealand. Dyrehaven (The Deer Park) is an enchanting and ancient forest situated near the sea at Klampenborg, to the north of Copenhagen. The very old Dyrehavsbakken is fondly referred to as "Bakken" (- "The Hill") by most Danes. Already from 1583 people came to visit the curative spring, Bakken is Europe's oldest amusement park. Just a little north of Copenhagen, it nestles in woodland, by a lake, close to the coast and Klampenborg station, only 15 minutes away from the centre of Copenhagen by bus, train or car. At Bakken you will find more than 100 attractions, almost 40 restaurants and cafes. Several places feature music and dancing. Bakken is more fun - and the entrance is always free.
