Had a question about the date here, or what caused it exactly.. Is it a particular VAM?
It looks reminiscent of a "BIE"-type die break, or maybe die rotation?

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant what's happening on particularly both of the eights in the date.
I was searching through the VAMs and noticed that a rotated die was discovered with a similar effect, in the same areas.
Thanks for the help!
Rest in Peace

The die break you're questioning is quite common on the eights throughout the Morgan series. It is caused by stress exerted in that area due to medal flow during striking.
Your coin looks like a match to VAM-14 Die 3 http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.c...VAM-14_Die_3

A similar date digit chip that is also somewhat common happened in 1902 and is referred to "filled 2" http://vamworld.com/wiki/Sort_by_Filled_2

*_* Wow. You nailed it, Dave! That's some impressive knowledge there!
That info helps a lot, because I also like to know more about a VAM than just it's number.

And I see you're an 1883-O nut! I have one now, probably about an MS-65+, that maybe you could help me with as well?
The obverse is very crisp, but the reverse has some dark toning and it's hard to figure out, but I'm thinking it's an O/O..
Rest in Peace

You're welcome and I'll absolutely try to attribute your 1883-O. Start another thread if you haven't already.
