Hi all,

I have an opportunity to purchase a 1908 German States WÜRTTEMBERG 5 Mark coin. The seller is a friend of the family and I want to ensure that a fair value for the coin is used by both parties. I have enclosed an image of the coin that I hope will help with grading. Also, was this coin counterfeited and if so, what should I look for.
Many thanks
David

At this point, it is probably safest to assume that every type and denomination of coin has been targeted by counterfeiters. As a start, confirm that it isn't attracted to a magnet. Then, move on to confirming diameter, weight, and thickness. Then, move on to confirming specific gravity/alloy of silver.

Assuming the coin is real, I think an offer of about $40-50 U.S. would be fair.

If you do an ebay sold items search, you will find one in comparable condition that sold for $48.

And this example, also close to the one you have shown, (but with some ugly scratches) sold for about $40 including the buyer's premium in 2018: https://wcn.pl/archive/151903?q=Nie...5+marek+1908

Edit: there are several that have sold on ebay in similar grade. Selling price range was $28 to $48. You may want to take a look.

Thanks for the response. That was the price range I was thinking of so good to have it confirmed. I have done the magnet test and all good so just need to run some weight and dimension tests.
