Hello Experts - I am new to the hobby and I have an Ultra noob cleaning question - I saw a video on numismatics and saw that it is not wise to clean a coin, because it will take away from the value -

Is this true?

Thanks,
Ultra

Once you become more expereinced, you'll learn there is a distinction between "cleaning" a coin which almost always adversely affects the metal surface and "conserving" a coin which when properly done does not affect the metal surface. Until you learn the difference, the emphatic rule is DON'T.

Cleaning coins is bad.

Conserving coins is good.

Learning how to conserve a coin takes education, patience, and a willingness to experiment on some worthless examples.

More often than not, the better option is to liquidate the "dirty" coin and put your efforts into acquiring a better example.

Cleaning a coin costs it's value to drop by at least 50%.

The reasons for no cleaning is several different ones. For on e thing cleaning a coin could and usually does remove some of the original metal. Another reason is in most cases cleaning leaves lines on the coins from usually excessive abrasives. Old furniture and oil paintings are similar in this that cleaning could ruin the item. Most antiques are rather best to leave alone.
