What do you think of the Smithsonian US Classic Gold Coin 9 pc Gold Coin Collection currently being sold? I've only seen it sold by GovMint.com, which describes them all as copper-nickle gold plated, 39mm, 31.1grams. I know they are just works of art, but they looked interesting as a gift for someone I know. https://www.govmint.com/9pc-1849-19...3QGPw4KKqsog

Sounds like you are a thoughtful gift-giver . As long as the giftee understands these are tchotchkes, not coins with numismatic value, then all is well.

If you buy them going in with the mind set that they will have little resale value in the future, then by all means get them. To me it has that feeling of a grandparent buying their grandkids coins from a fast talking salesman on t.v. John1

Thanks for your replys. I kind of feel like John1 does, kind of like "commemorative NASCAR plates" or something.

Based on what private mints charge for making challenge coins and other private medals, worth about $27. After market value about $9.

personally I would never purchase coins struck at any mint except the US Mint. mainly because they all tend to be a novelty and very few if any have any real value increase over their lifetime and most lose value. give them something of value not something that looks pretty. if you want to give them a coin(s) consider a solid silver coin or set that costs the same as the set you are looking at. there are many available today like the 1 oz American Silver Eagle $1 Coin which I think you can get for about $35 each
