Thanks, good to know that and if for a second they were fakes or modified they would be going back. Some of those coins did have some wear too. Now we enter Lizzy 1953 described as UNC, I am not so sure, but could just be a really weak strike, which was typical that year. 1956 - gEF one of the better dates in the Lizzy series, this is a good one too - but yet here, its the most worn of the lot. 1958 Choice UNC, yes theres a bit of marks here, but this is still a knock out coin in my opinion and this coin and the 1960s ones surprised me being just $12 - $15 each. Common, marked or not - this is a nice coin.

I'm in love with my '58 as well. The year I was born, I might add. Steve :)

The price graph for George V Florins in higher grades rises more steeply than for George V1 and Elizabeth 11 Florins.
Since I am a type collector, I am happy with a 1936 than with an earlier date in lower condition of the same value.

sel_69l - I agree, I do not even want to approach buying an Edward VII Florin, I think even a VG one is about $40 or so and given my new collection, I will want a VF ideally and settle for a Fine or better - so thats a $100 plus coin alone. Jbuck - Thanks Triggersmob - Lovely coin! Last 4 coins - the 1960 to 1963 1960 another UNC+ piece 1961, another UNC stunner 1962 described as choice, the obverse shots are a bit dark, photographic technology is limited for me at the moment. 1963 - This is cheating, the tails is real, but the heads is borrowed from the 1962 as I forgot to take a photo of it, taking photos, processing them and compressing them as my phone takes like 3500 x 3000 pixel ones with like 3mb size just takes heaps of time.

By 1958 the master die for Australian Florins had for practical purposes had almost worn out, and a new master die for Australian Florins 1959 to 1963 had to be prepared. That is why the quality of 1959 Florins is suddenly better.
One small problem for the 1959 issue:- A small chip in the master 1959 die went unnoticed, which is seen as what looks to be an egg between the emu's feet, and so all of the 1959 coins issued for circulation have this feature.
Interestingly, a separate proof die for 1959 without the die chip was made. Evidence of tool working to remove the lump off the hub can be seen, on all of the proof Florins for this date.

Sel_691, thanks for the info on the 1959 Florin. I just had to go check mine and I see what you mean.

Thanks for that info, I need to get a 59 abd had noticed the 1960 coin seems a bit sharper than the 1958, despite the fact both are blazing UNC things.
I need to badly update my Aussie coin catalogue, my 2009 McDonald does not really cut it anymore!

I have bought 3 more coins off the same guy The first is a 1933 a semi key and this coin is pretty rough (What do you expect for $25) He claims its VG but to me, may tails is VG, but that Heads is barely Good+ - George is little more than a silhouette. Still happy to have a semi key. Shame its not a year earlier and a huge contrast to my very nice 1934 coin. It gets better from here This is 1940 and described as EF - I would agree, a nice piece with very light overall wear, it also cost me $25 Best for last The 1951 50th anniversary of Federation Florin, I have always wanted an UNC example of this coin and this one if not UNC, would be darn close. What I thought was wear is actually a bad strike and the mark on the King's cheek is a very bad knock. Overall the lustre and glisten makes it at least AU. There is some flattening on the maceheads but this could be again a poor strike (These coins were notorious for bad strikes). I paid $40 for this one. All of these coins were from the same stable as the above ones.

The '53 is the scarcer large denticle variety by the looks of it.

Thanks
I spent a whole year here and it took me that long to discover how popular Australian coins are and how many experts there are. You guys are really helping me as my catalogue is pretty basic.
I have bought another Florin and hope to show it soon.
