All,

As you know, my grading skills are lacking. Prior to my tapping you experienced collectors for specific grading estimates, I was using primarily PCGS's photo guide and NGCs verbal descriptions, the latter more for MS-level grading. I have also used some videos I found online for assistance and comparing some of my coins to the graded coins on ebay, Great Collections, and Heritage, where I see flaws that would seem to have been ignored or at least minimized from the PCGS/NGC sites. I am particularly interested in getting some perspectives about the accuracy of NGC's descriptions of MS grading characteristics. I recognize that grading is a blend of objectivity and subjectivity (science/art) and that it is difficult to capture things like "eye-appeal" and "luster", the length and depth of scratches, etc. I know that it is certainly more difficult to be accurate by looking at photos rather than the actual coin(s) Perhaps the easiest explanation is my inexperienced "eye" for the features. Any comments would be welcome.

Thanks a lot!

I have sent a few coins for grading based on photo guide and comparing them to my coins.
But after paying for the True View feature on PCGS, my coin did not stand up to the highest grade ...Except for one exception of a coin that I feel should have been graded higher, ill be sending it back for reconsideration.
Choose your coins wisely.

I'm basically a paper money collector, but I would say I have found many discrepancies between PMG's (NGC's) verbal descriptions and the appearance of their graded notes in hand. I find their verbal descriptions superficial and generous compared to the way they actually grade notes.

Looking at the graded coins is the best way to understand the grading system
(at least for MS coins)IMO. Try to get in front of as many slabbed coins as you can.
I once spent over 4 hours looking at nothing but slabbed MS63 coins. After a while
something clicked and I started seeing upper end, lower end, and average coins fot
that specific grade. of course it works on any grade range you want. Then comes the
fun part! getting upper end or undergraded coins for one standard price.
