Need your opinions for pricing on a 1944 D/S OMM-01 Lincoln Cent. If I remember correctly, the coin was upper Fine to lower EF with the dealer grading EF-45. It does a have a strong mintmark and overstrike.

Sorry, no pictures because it's a raw coin at a coin shop. Thanks for your help. I just don't want to pay too much for this coin, but I am willing to pay a fair price.

Upper Fine to lower EF is a huge range, are you referring to upper VF?
Coppercoins has VF listed at $75 and EF listed at $175.

Thanks for the response. There lies my problem with the large price difference between these grades. The dealer has an EF price on the coin and I don't feel the coin overall is EF (would be a stretch for me to grade it that high). But the mintmark and overstrike are really good.

Let you know what I decide.

Did you tell your dealer that? Perhaps offer him $100 and see what he says.

Yes, I guess I wasn't totally awake this morning. I meant VF not fine. I'm going to look at it tomorrow and will let you know the result. This is one coin that grades really do make a difference at $100 per grade. That's why I really appreciate the grading help string on CC.

At least this coin is fairly straight forward to grade. I have the most problems with those coins with weak strikes to consider as part of the grading process as well as the wear.

Again, thanks for the suggestions.

The value of a variety such as this may not be fairly determined just by the grade of the overall coin. Since the die wears and the over mint mark becomes mushy as it nears it end, you should determine the die state by comparing it to early die states. Look at the upper "S" curve north of the "D". If it is very distinct and not just a horn on the top of the "D", I would consider paying above the coin grade as you are paying for the OMM rather than the 1944 coin.

Jim, thanks for the input. I totally agree with you that I am buying the coin for the D/S and the grade though important is secondary. This should make my coin shop happy.

I bought the coin for $110. If you're interested I will post a picture. But first I need to figure out how get pictures posted, so it may be awhile (probably next week).
