Okay that made me feel like I am being lazy. See when I am not at work or helping one of the kids, I go to looking at the change I have collected. Of course in search of that 40,000 $ coin that was chillin in my pocket. Beats playing the lottery. Sorry if I dont educate myself more on my own but it seems that this site has many professors and letting them do the teaching is beneficial in more ways than one. Thank you john, coop, joseph and few more I cant recall their names. Thank uou very much!!

As a fisherman myself... coop, I could not resist! This snowball effect also applies to our hobby!

I don't post very often, but I do read a lot of the posts on here and do view a lot of the photos others have posted. I do research hours and hours daily. I read books over and over and over again. Sometimes I think I confuse myself. But I have to say anything new that someone is trying to learn can be scary. Especially when they hear stories of someone throwing back a valuable coin that they could have once had in their very own hands. Big-Kingdom you explained the minting process very well, plain English and down to earth. Maybe better than most can explain the difference between an Error and a Variety. I think that maybe that most people when they see a Doubled Die, it is just that it is Doubled. Some times its hard to wrap your brain around the fact that the doubling has to happen a certain way for it to be considered a Doubled Die. There is so much information out there that it can be confusing. Please don't give up on those of us that are still trying to learn.
Maybe it is not that they are not doing the research or trying to learn. Maybe they just want the experts to confirm what they have or don't have. Maybe it could be that they are not fully understanding the process. If they seem to begin to argue, maybe it is because they don't understand the "Why Not" of their question. Some times you have to explain yourself as if your speaking to a child. The language for coin collecting is different than simple plain English. It's like learning a new language altogether. Six months ago, all I knew was this 1923 Peace Liberty was beautiful, and I wondered why my Mom had put it away, and where did it come from. WOW. I know it can become tiresome, but we are all in this together. I ask questions over and over again. I go to the same web-sites a couple times a day to look at the same Doubled Die, it's all for conformation, and clarity. Some times the question is "If this coin is this Doubled Die and it looks just like that coin, then why is my coin not a Doubled Die. Thank you Coop for being so patient with all of us. I would like to meet you in person one day and shake your hand. I love your photos, mine are horrible. I have learnt so much from you I can't even begin to explain. I already know that if I can't find what I am looking for any where else, I know I can look for almost anything that you have written, or posted and 9 out of 10 times, it's there. Thank you again.
Big-Kingdom, I carry so much respect for you guys and don't even know you, and so do a lot of others here. I guess maybe all that I am trying to say is that maybe some people are not really trying to argue. Maybe they just don't know how to say "I thought this or that, or can you explain this a little clearer. I don't understand. Please be patient with us.
All you guys are great, with so much knowledge that most of us will never scratch the surface. There are coins that I never knew existed until coming here. I hope none of you think that your not teaching us anything, because you are, even when we disagree. Sorry this was so long.

This is my 27th post. I look forward to many, many more. The overwhelming amount of practical information this forum provides is a deep wellspring for a enthuse that borders on obsessive. Believing I have a 1 in 10 million coin in my pocket change is a lure without parallel. Many novice posts (including my first uninformed assumptions) I've recently read here are full of innocence and hope that they too have found the "1". You can tell a lot about a person by the way they receive information, both good and bad. You can also tell a lot about a person based on the way they deliver information, both good and bad. In today's world the shotgun blast of "truth" driven by social media reveal how people receive and deliver reality differently. To me it is this dimension that makes this forum unique, fascinating and a reflection of us. The owner(s), managers and mods here have done an amazing job providing a place that taps into a means of connecting many primitive psychological dots. We are all products of the hunters and gatherers that once roamed the savanna thousands of years ago. The coin represent so much more, it is for some the dingus. With all due respect to the believers of divinity. Margaret Mead, Indiana Jones, Sigmund Freud and Mark Zuckerberg all in one roll of pennies at coincommunity.com I apologize for the lengthy analysis. I am getting ready to retire and it is the primary reasons why I am here - a new hobby. My retirement has me focused on perspective, and what I'm going to be doing with all my time. Please accept the unsolicited expression of my opinion it was a joy to put into writing.

We learn new stuff sometimes daily. So it is an unending hobby. After you think your figured it out, something new comes along. As a family we all treat one another with respect. That is what keeps us going like a well oiled machine.

Quote: they have that $40K coin they saw on etsy Which isn't ever what they claim it to be, and some so ugly they wouldn't even garner face value, much less $40k. Etsy is like the last place to even consider buying a coin..ever. Quote: put your coins in a flip, save them , continue to interact and learn, and revisit your coin in a couple of years and reevaluate it then. Lol, I went through a few card sleeves of stuff I carded up and labeled when I was a newb and wow.I realized was truly ignorant to all things error and variety coinage. And just had to laugh at myself because I'm pretty sure I let my ignorance project stupidity on a few topics I posted on here just knowing they were the real deal. I apologize if I made anyone cry. I must've had the largest MD collection in my area if not the entire state of Texas. Wasted a lot of 2 x 2's returning them back into the wild. So yeah, if you're interested in numismatics, stick around and you will develop the knowledge and the passion to amass a nice collection. A word to the wise though.this can be an expensive hobby, even more so than golf, but maybe not as much as a crack addiction so you might better wanna run it by your spouse first. And lastly, no one is right all the time, (Not even Coop) that's why the consensus of knowledgeable collectors on each topic is generally right 95% of the time. And the 5% when it's not is most likely due to horrible pics or lack of pics from the OP and of course when there's MD exhibited on a genuine doubled die. Pictures are one dimensional and it's hard to capture what you're seeing so remember.nothing beats coin in hand when you're trying to attribute an error or variety coin.

You seem very confused about a lot of things. Particularly
1. Varieties and errors are not the same thing. Varieties are cataloged, errors are not.
2. The Varieties attributed by TPGs (with the exception of ANACS, who attribute everything) are not the list we here use. People here are using Wexler's, variety vista, and copper coins mostly, which is far, far, far more exhaustive than the cherrypicker's guide (to which you're presumably making reference).
Are there some instances of people here nay-saying real errors and varieties? Sadly yes. It is very easy to get into the bad habit of rejecting minor errors and varieties when you see so many non-errors posted every day, but over all the users here are very good.
It's also important to know who is giving you the information/response here. A yes or a no from an expert like Tropical Bats, Tanman2001, or Mike Diamond is pretty much gospel, other users' opinions could be less reliable. Look at post history, since the number of posts often correlates with expertise (although not always).
