i am looking for some help in identifying the differences in the 1982 lincoln cents. small date v. large date. is there any way of determining if the coin is the copper cent or the zinc cent - other than weighing them. thanks.

This link will give you the diagnostics for differentiating small date from large date and an audible way for separating copper from zinc.

Biokemist6: Do you know what's happening with this project? I sent in my counts, but never heard anything.

I think CCs job in Florida was a bit hectic for him, he is actually moving back to Missouri in January so I imagine that he will probably do more work on it once he gets settled again.

Thanks for the update. I thought it was a great idea. Sorry to here Fl didn't work, but he'll be closer to me now. Really need to pay my dues to Coneca and get back into the information loop.

I've been trying to tell the difference between the small and large dates for weeks now. This thread definitely got me to notice the difference quite easily.

Here's my question: I've hoarded about 60 1982 cents and have gotten exactly 6 small date cents. Is this a common ratio?

Now all I need is a scale and I'll be able to tell the difference in metals.

My observation from roll searching is that there's fewer zinc 82's, not sure about small and large MM ratios. IMO, it's not even worth "hoarding" them unless they are BU and clean. They are tough to find BU in circulation, as well as the rest of the 80's series. I stash all BU cents in nice condition.

If you are looking for the complete 82's for your Lincoln Cent collection. In my opinion, it's best to just find a dealer you can trust to sell you the pack of them for a few bucks.

And WELCOME!

My ears were burning.

I still have all of the information passed to me from the cent count, and will be working on it once I get back to Missouri. Yes, Florida was a bust - the job chewed up way too much of my time, and it was more demanding than I believe any job should be. So I am leaving next month, moving back to my house in Missouri.

I will begin working on the cent count information in February. I skipped 2008 for the count, because I hadn't even completed the 2007 count information - but I will be reactivating the count in 2009.
