What are the test tokens I see on ebay? Are they similar to what a pattern coin would be in the US or an essai on French coins?

Is the little P under the queen's head related to this? How do they get out to the collector population?

Are they generally collected to have a complete set of dollars for example?

Thanks in advance

Test tokens are usually the same size and weight of a coin slated to go into circulation that is different from what is already in circulation because of a change in materials, which may make it lighter than circulation coinage.

The P "mintmark" refers to the new composition of our coins, which are now plated steel. Test tokens made of this metal were sent around to vending machine companies so that they could see what modifications were necessary regarding the proposed changed coinage.

They are not usually dated, and they usually aren't collected in "sets" although they can be collected by type/design.

When testing is concluded on them, they are supposed to be returned to the mint.

In some years the P (1999 I think) indicates the coin comes from a batch of test tokens. However, the P has now entered general circulation. These are not pattern or essai coins, these are test tokens issued to vending machine operators for machine calibration.
