1974-D Roosevelt Dime, Actually Missing Letters!

Free2bme New Member United States 48 Posts	Posted 12/01/2008 6:45 pm Please look at these pics of this dime and tell me if I need glasses or not! It's missing the "US-" in E PLURIBUS UNUM. The're not ground off or an extremely faint strike. They're just not there. Please tell me what you think or how this can happen. Is it common? I can't find any info. Report this Post to the Staff

rockdude Pillar of the Community United States 1807 Posts	Posted 12/01/2008 6:52 pm Your coin is actually called a filled die error they are very common in production runs. During the striking process grease, metal slivers, threads from clothing etc. get into the press area. Since oil and grease can not be compressed the metal can't flow into the recess of the die. Thus leaving the design incomplete. Report this Post to the Staff

SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 12/01/2008 7:07 pm The fact that it's such a clean absence is proof of the Grease Fill - only a liquid could fill a die so perfectly flush. The pressure of striking the first coin after the grease appeared forced any excess grease from the area. It could possibly have stayed in place for a run of quite a few coins.
