1939 nickel, Looks like split serifs. Maybe Die Fatigue?

1959 D The E and S look like split serifs, What a the valleys of pits? What is with the eye?

1982 P Same thing with some doubling and valleys of pits. What causes this?

Your 1939 nickel is a case of hub doubling, but unfortunately it is master die doubling and occurs on almost every issue from 1939 through 1964. It is extremely common and not worth a premium...but you are correct in that this is genuine "split serifs" or "notching" to be expected with a doubled die.

Your 1959 and 1982 nickels are victims of die fatigue. As the die wears out, these pits and valleys form. They are called "flow lines" and can be rather extreme in some cases, as is shown in your really nice photography. Because nickel is the hardest metal we mint, it shows on the nickels much more profoundly than on most of the other coins we have minted through the years...primarily because the dies wear out faster than with the other coins.

If you look around for a while you will find that this die fatigue is rather prominent on Jefferson nickels. A challenge would be building an entire BU set of nickels that has no coins exhibiting this die fatigue...that's a difficult challenge.

To add: The problem with die fatigue is one of the main reasons why I didn't dual-specialize in cents and nickels. I find it difficult to bother looking at nickels under magnification because so many of them look so mushy.
