Just finished rereading the U.S. Mint and Coinage by Don Taxay. Would highly recommend anyone interested in the history of the Mint and the numerous chapters for history of specific coins to get a copy.

This is a well researched book and is often referenced in publications that currently come out.

Just thought I would share the recommendation in case any of you are looking for an enjoyable, informative, and very interesting read.

I agree! It's a very good book - I've referred to it many times while researching topics of interest.

I like all of Taxay's books.

In addition to The U.S. Mint and Coinage. I also have these other Taxay-penned volumes in my library - I would recommend all of them.

- Scott's Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of U.S. Coins 1971

- Counterfeit, Mis-struck, And Unofficial U.S. Coins: A Guide For The Detection Of Cast and Struck Counterfeits, Electrotypes, and Altered Coins

- An Illustrated History of U. S. Commemorative Coinage

- Money of the American Indians and Other Primitive Currencies of the Americas

Note: While a tremendous amount of new information has come to light regarding counterfeit coins since Taxay's Counterfeit volume was published in 1963, its core lessons are still valid and the history of famous counterfeits and unofficial US coins included is very interesting and a worthwhile read!

I also have the counterfeit one. Another very interesting read for anyone who does not have this volume.

Don Taxay disappeared in a most unusual manner and has been speculated on for years as to what exactly happened. An interesting story with no real concrete conclusion.

His writing was exemplary and is he still considered one of the foremost experts on US coinage, by many of the Coin World's luminaries, authors and researchers.
