These issues are not my core area of collecting, but I have always been intrigued by the stark designs and interesting history. In short, several Spanish provinces issued their own coins, including the Balearic Islands, Barcelona, Catalonia, Gerona, Lerida, Navarre, Tarragona, Tortosa, and Valencia. These coins were minted during the Peninsular War, which pitted the alliance of spain/Portugal/UK against Napoleon's French forces between the years 1807 and 1814.

1808 - Gerona province - 1 Duro (5 Pesetas)
The Gerona (also spelled Girona) province is located in the NE corner of spain. The aspect of this piece that I found to be the most interesting was the hand cut rim reading, whick Krause suggests makes each piece unique.

1809 - Tarragona province - 5 Pesetas
Tarragona is a seaport city located in the NE corner of spain in the Calatonia region.

Zohar - I have a dog-eared old Krause that I have flipped through countless times, and the section on the Spanish provinces immediately follows the Spain section. I brought back handfuls of Spanish coins when I visited in the early 1990s, and that seems to be where the seed of interest was planted. When a couple of them come across Mark Teller's website, I decided to give in. https://www.tellercoins.com

Coins like these make the hobby very interesting.
The top coin looks like it could be made in a shop with simple tools and a hand punch--which perhaps allowed the minting process to be mobile during a time of war?
