Hi all! I am giving myself a headache trying to figure out what variety this 1798 large cent is... looks like a "first hairstyle" except the curl just below the ear looks like it curls the wrong way... maybe it is just an illusion because of the wear? According to PCGS they show that curling down (to the right) on a 1st hairstyle..

Can't help with the variety, but that's a handsome example.

Got it! S-162-- Wisps of incomplete hair below Liberty are the key feature. It IS an 1st hairstyle.... wear just made it look odd.

I'm curious about the grade which PCGS assigned to this coin .... What did they say?

Agree with first hairstyle. The grading was done by NGC not PCGS ... according to the holder. Yes, it does look like the 162, but I'm not 100 pc sure.

It was graded by NGC as VG 8. I had put on the invoice to give it the first hairstyle designation, but I guess I did it wrong? I though they did those kind of designations for free..

At least they straight graded it. I was hoping that, since it is a very early year, they might have bumped up their grade one more notch.

IMHO, the holder doesn't do this coin justice. In addition to not providing the variety, NGC has undergraded the piece. This coin is minimally a most pleasing F-12. For VG-8 money, I think it's a steal!

I agree, I was hoping for a Fine 12. I even intentional sent it in as a early bird because of its value-- at VG I could have just done it with an economy submission. C'est la vie. Might be because of the several large hits it has. At least it was not "details" coin. I have noticed ANACS has Really tightened up their standards lately, but that is a topic for another day (oen which I plan on doing an "experiment" and will post my findings once they are all in.

These are the reasons I sort of stopped collecting those. Seams like a zillion different types.

That's just something for us anal retentive weirdos (Still need 2 to have all 185 Sheldon numbered Draped Bust cents. Anyone got a CHEAP S-96 or 217? )

Wow that's an amazing thing Gary! only 2 more varieties? Too bad they are the ones that are so dang hard to find. Good Luck! Chris McCauley has a S-96 scuddzy VG Details and not exactly cheap at $4500 S-217 you say? Yeah good luck.

If I wasn't still paying for my S-1 that S-96 sounds tempting.
