Ouch! One of the worst things about this hobby is the inability to share any information about your hobby except to a select few. That is also one of the beauties of an on-line forum in that you can have discussions with anonymity. It sounnds like someone knew what they were looking for on this one.

They guy hit it on the head when he said that it had to be someone who knew he was gone. That probably took a few hours to do. Ugh.

...unless an honest coin dealer or pawn shop owner recognizes Cohen's collection he's out of luck.
Actually, once he gets the inventory/pics out there, coin shops are pretty vigilant to look out for stolen collections. I've heard of a few happy endings in the short time I've collected, so I'll stay optimistic.

Wow, he needs new neighbors. He needed (too late now) a security system or a safe deposit box.

Rob a Bank and get, $5k or rob some guy that's out of town and get $500k. What's a thief to do!!

Guy didn't appear to be that upset for someone who just lost $500k.

No insurance and why not in a safe deposit box? No alarm system, or cameras ?

I don't know if you've seen this one. It is out of the web page for the Crescent City Coin Club (New Orleans area. I simply copied it and am entering it here. This was written by someone else, not me:

Two of our dearest friends were robbed the evening of November 2nd in Bessemer Alabama , Joe and Jean Gallo who deals in error coins and varieties. They were the victim of a planted GPS tracking device under the wheel well of their truck. Their complete inventory was taken. He even had a very rare 1969-S Double Die Obverse Lincoln Cent. If anyone comes across an unusual amount of errors or varieties from suspicious sellers, please contact Joe or Jean at 985-768-0203. They would appreciate any help you can offer. Please let all of your friends and local dealers to be on the lookout. A GPS tracking device detector would help eliminate some of these robberies. I am researching where and what exactly to purchase to detect these gadgets.

There appear to be a lot of forensic evidence and I am sure those that saw the car can identify it. I too shall remain optimistic!

On the brighter side, did anyone notice the reporter said (both in the written report and in the video) Indian Head Cent and not Penny.

Neighbors apparently noticed this hole in the garage door and saw a vehicle parked in Cohen's driveway but never called police.

It pays to have good neighbors, this guy did not.

A good nabe is just as important as "the house". Sadly, some neighbors in so-called "nicer" burbs often keep totally to themselves. That's my guess here.

Just one of the problems with our modern electronic information availability. For example if you insure your valuables, today all such info goes into computers. These are maintained by a usual never ending supply of different personal. Some may not be the most honest individuals. Or if they loose their jobs they may well leave with bundle of personal info. Many people have coin magazines delivered to their houses. These sometimes are visible from the street. Sort of like advertising you have coins. Same with gun, knife, sword types of magazines.
Having a safe delivered to your house is another form of advertising you have something in that place that needs to be stolen. And don't forget the people that deliver them.
Many people when going on vacation tell the police, fire department, post office, milk or other delivery services. More advertising an empty house.
Don't knock the neighbors. Did anyone pay them to watch the house? Not their job. One of the many house robberies around me was when someone went on vacation. A moving van pulled up, told the nosey neighbors that the people that lived there decided to move to where they were now at on vacation. The movers emptied the house including a safe and a security system. Naturally when the vacationers came home they were shocked at the empty place.
The worst part of a coin collection being stolen is that most criminals are not Numismatically intelligent. So many of the coins end up in coin counting machines in stores or even banks. Some sold at flea markets.

I believe a few months ago, the feds were going after people who held off shore bank accounts because an employee lost his job and he printed out a list(I think) off all the account holders and turned it over to the police. I've also heard stories were people's personal information like social security numbers(one case was from a hospital and it was found on the side of a highway) were just thrown out in the garbage and anyone can find it. Scary.

I wonder about how inflated the value of this collection was for the report. Probably replacement value? Still, he must have had an amazing collection.

When I go on vacation I have a family member stay over to care for my cats. At least that what I tell them. LOL If they can put a gps tracking device on your pet, car, cell phone why cant they put one on a safe or a TPG slab? Sounds like a good idea for a $10,000+ coins. I used to sell cell phones that where made for kids who had to walk home from school or friends house. The phones where made so you could track them from your home computer or other cell phone(cost per month$10). I also sold Blackjack car tracking security systems($10-15month). I always told my customers if someone is wanting to steal your car call 911 on your cell phone and toss it under the seat and walla instant tracking device for police. They can find it in under 3 min. I also have a cute neighbor that has a tracking device but it's on her ankle. Hummmm bad girl

The worst part is when the rare coins goes to the wrong hand and they don't know how to handle the coins and they distroy it. What a lost to the numismatic world.

I'm not buying the "story". Light up a gas torch in a 500 sqft garage with 8' ceiling, burn metal and see what happens. If that doesn't work, then start chipping on cement for a few hours in your garage and see what happens.
