I've recently picked up a Prince of Wales Model Half Sovereign and all of the lettering on it is border line illegible. I have no ideas what could have happened with dies to make it like this and can't imagine it is PMD.

Could anyone help / enlighten me?

Stuff in parentheses I'm not sure of. But I read the script as:

Obverse
Victoria Queen of (Wales) and Britain

Reverse
The Prince of Wales Model (Hal & Bowen)

Difficult to know what caused the damage but it looks like the dies have been used well beyond their useful life.

I had a look at various Prince of Wales counters and think this is the one where it was struck from usable dies.
