having recently completed a $25 box of lincoln cents, I managed to get 8 wheat cents, 58d, 57p, 56d ( with quite a lot of original mint luster, quite high grade, probably AU), 53d, 52d, 47d, 42p, 18p (quite worn probably only G3or G4). I also kept several "82" working on identifying the small date/large date. I have that part done quite well, now the zinc/copper issue. I am looking forward to getting another bank box.

The kids love to do this with me. I take a few wheaties and slyly toss them in there too, so they get more excited than just finding the dozen or so each box has. As far as they know each box has about two dozen.

I get between 2-8 Wheats per box. Most of them are 50's in EF or so. I have yet to get a Wheat better than EF from a box. My best finds have been a 2005 S Proof and a 1999 Wide-AM. However, I do get some nice BU's from every box. For me, it's exciting to find a nice 60-80's BU cent. For 1990-2008 they have be very, very nice before I keep them.

I'm with Thad on the 60-80's BU. I have been buying loose rolls instead of boxes from a local bank. I will as for $10-$20 in "pennies" so they go into their vault and bundle me up loose rolls. At one point I was finding 1 wheatie per 2 rolls! Needless to say, after a few hundred dollars worth, they don't have anymore loose rolls in their vault..boo. But this has worked for me, I hope it works for you!
And it's never a bad idea to give the tellers a little unexpected treat, like a box of crispy cremes or something...you make them happy and they will try to make you happy.

Yeah, I got the same look from the tellers at the bank when I'd ask for pennies like that. They think we are wierd people or something :)

LOL
I ALWAYS get asked...what do you want those for? I tell 'em straight up I'm a collector. They DO NOT like giving those boxes out, they lose money on them. On the plus side, I always bring in a box of my searched rolls in exchange. I seem to get less grief from them when I do that, it's more like an even trade.

Aren't you worried that you'll search the same roll twice?
