Designing a State Quarter is no 2-bit challenge.

It might be easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than to sum up Arizona in an illustration less than an inch wide. But a 22-member volunteer committee will work through the year to put the state on the numismatic map, the 48th quarter issued as part of the U.S. Mint's 50 State Quarters Program.

Artists, historians, educators and just-plain people (including a Phoenix fourth- grader) have been charged with finding and developing the quintessential Arizona image.

By 2008, their work will result in the Arizona State Quarter, among the last to be issued in the year the program ends its ambitious and very successful 10-year cycle.
