I am sure that you gentlemen are all aware of the Mint's intention to offer a 2006 limited-edition collectors set of silver eagles. It will be the first 20th. anniversary set and will contain three (3) 1-ounce Silver Eagle bullion coins with diffferent finishes. The number of sets is unknown at this time, or the specific type of finishes on the coins. Price is not yet determined, nor is the issue date (later this year).
The 10th anniversary set of Eagles had one of the few silver eagles that has really gone up in price. Could this 20th anniversary set have the same kind of luck? What are your feelings, and are you going to buy one of these when they come out?

I'll start saving my money. Sounds like a good investment. I don't invest in coins, but there's nothing wrong with buying coins which should go up in value.

Apparently the mint is going to that well until every drop is gone! Satin finish, First Strike, Mint Finish, Special This, Special That. All they are doing is taking the same coin and maniplating it to make us collectors believe it is special. What nonsense...or is it? I missed out in 1995 when they stuck that 1995-W ASE with the other gold coins. We cried, "No Fair" as a collector of silver collected silver because they couldn't afford to collect gold. Look at how much that 1995-W ASE coin is worth today! I will see how many sets the mint will produce and see if there will be any special designation for these coins. But if I wait, will I lose out? Maybe it is 1995 all over again.

It is my understanding, at this time, there will be two different sets and one of them will involve the silver eagle and the new gold buffalo one ounce coin as well! That will be the keeper, the gold and the silver! Should hear more in the next few weeks so I am keeping my eyes and ears open. Old Dan the 1995W silver eagle is being listed now at $5000.00 in the price guides so I am NOT about to pass up this gold and silver set! If I have to pick poo-poo with the chickens or eat road kill with the buzzards I am going to have the money to buy this set!

You are correct, and as described in Coin World it would be a 1 oz Proof Silver Eagle along with a 1 oz Golden Eagle. quote: Originally posted by crystalk64

Here is where I would caution you in your thinking. They said they were going to have 3 ea. 1 oz Silver Eagles with DIFFERENT finishes in one set. You see what I'm getting at? I believe it will be the one with the finish that is not being normally contained on circulated and proof coins now. What ever that may be, it will be the 'odd' ball and possibly worth something in the future. Aah, what the heck, buy both sets and be safe!

I can personally guarantee you which ever set I don't buy will be worth a fortune in a matter of years! May have to just buy both so I will be covered but, with my luck, there will be 500,000 of each sold and the price will plumment even before I take delivery! Nothing like be optimistic now is there?

It seems that the Mint has released additional information on the three bullion coin sets for later this year.
The three coin set of Silver Eagles will have one with the regualr uncirculated finish, one with the proof finish, and one with 'possibly' a RBU (reverse brilliant uncirculated) finish. It would have the raised portions such as design devices, inscriptions and date would be cameo finish and the frosted background. ( reverse of the proof finish)
Also, and here is the kicker. They all may have mint marks. That is something to be decided, but don't be surprised if this happens. A real great set of Silver Eagles for the anniversary.

Yes, and if the Mint is actually thinking about profits they ALL will have the new gold bullion buffalo in the set! Dig deep, dig deep!

I'm digging I'm digging--[:p][:p]--Considering that I have the 1995 set, it would be foolish of me not to purchase a couple 3 sets of these when they come out. Whether their price goes up or not is irrelevant. (Ya right)--

You are absolutely right CiScO and don't think for a minute that the Mint isn't figuring on this helping sales this time around. I just hope they place a limit on these sets to begin with and not wait until there is a big fuss and bad feeling because of a very quick sellout.

Well If I cant get one at the mint I will bite the bullet and try to buy one on the open market(shudder)......but at any rate if there is going to be a special finish on one of those coins....no SAE set will be complete without one....its like the Cheerios Sacagawea......there will only be 5000 maximum complete sets of the Sacky due to that one coin........and everyone has seen the retail prices for those right now......awesome!!!!

CoinNut the "keeper" of the summer will be the new pure gold one ounce Buffalo nickel design coin paired with a silver eagle which will probably carry the W mint mark! There will be 3 sets offered this summer and I don't think any serious collector wants to pass on the gold Buffalo nickel (full ounce) as it may be just a 6 month run with 2007 being a new design for international sales. I am sure we will find out more soon but until then I do know the mint is working on politically correct designs, which they could not get ready before this summer so they went with a reproduction of the Buffalo nickel. This gold coin may be the hottest piece of gold the U.S. has struck since 1933! Time will tell!
