Hi everyone, I recently purchased this 1925 penny and I am a little worried about its appearance. I think perhaps it has been cleaned or possibly even fake. It is quite bright but not so shiny. I assume if it has been cleaned it is not worth grading?

I hope these photos show it well.

Thanks!

where did you buy it, and how much did you pay, do you have return options?

In ef it is worth over 2,000$.. I would never buy this date without it being certified..

You should be worried by it's appearance.
Red without luster doesn't add up.

About 10 years ago, the Chinese decided to target rare pre decimal Australian coins.
Pictures of 1925 Pennies, similar the example posted were published in the Coin and Banknote Magazine some years ago.

It's too good for me to authenticate from screen shot pictures.
Have it checked by Downies or Noble Numismatics. Both companies would have a few come across their counters in the last 10 years or so. They can't afford to make a mistake.

I haven't specialized in Australian coins for many decades.
Sorry about that.

Agreed with all above - although I don't specialize in these issues, it seems to me that the harsh cleaning was used to hide mushy details and anomalies that might point to a Chinese fake.

It may? be harsh cleaning, but the possibility that it was centrifugal pressure diecast needs to be investigated; the surface texture is suggestive of this technique.

Such a technique does not produce casting bubbles, but it does produce a product with fine detail.
Die cast zinc has been used for toymaking for many decades.

I cases like this, it is good to doubt the doubter as well (me, in this case), but the essential need to investigate remains.

I think the seller for whatever motivation got it wrong, but even the doubter should leave at some room to doubt himself, albeit small on this occasion.

Not AU sorry more closer VF and clean harshly, yes it seem too shiny for its age but I think it probably due to the clean it had.

To me it looks as though it is a cast and brushed coin , no a struck coin.
Hard to tell from a photo as it could well be very harshly cleaned.

As for AU , even without the cleaning it would hardly grade to Fine+ . Once cleaned it doesn't even make the G to VG grade.

Send it back...

It does look cleaned...too much luster for the wear...can anyone pint out the diagnostics for a genuine 1925?
