I do not know why but I also feel the same way. For some reason, Denver quarters (and other denominations) always seem to have a 'crisper shine' to them than those from Philly. It's almost like they use different planchets.

I too have noticed this trend. I've been searching lots of quarters this year for W quarters. I've found that the Philly quarters are of lesser quality than Denver quarters. This goes back quite a while as well.

it's a different mint, same maker of the presses, but they have different set up and different "care" regimes of the machines as well as different minters at either pocation that do things differently and were taught differently.

All in all Denver does less output consistently, they don't have the pressures the Philadelphia mint has to keep producing. I don't know if they make a better product and this is why they are slower, or if they are slower and make a better product with the extra time. What I do know is Denver rarely even competes with the amount of output that the Philadelphia mint produces in any given year.

The W mintmarked quarters are worlds apart from the Denver ones (and especially the Philadelphia ones) if you can believe that. It's not even comparable and much higher quality out of a fresh roll when seen side by side.
