are the "wood grained" looking pennies something people just collect for fun or is there some sort of reason behind this look on the coin
I have noticed many of the 80's coins usually have this look

Slash - the Canadians have varieties to look for, also. There's a 1952 doubled date among others.

Here is a counter-punched 2000 LMC I found a while ago.

I don't know what this symbol is supposed to represent,if anything at all, but it looks neat.
