That would be the A and M in AMERICA on the reverse of the cent. Most 98,99 and 2000 cents have them close together(the bottoms look like they are touching) so the " Wide AM"(abbreviated WAM) is a variety. The 98 and 2000 are fairly common, the 99 is very rare.

mtm... Welcome to CCF...

So far, I've found 3 plastic cents. 2 of them have been inside brinks rolls.

I found "Alaska" tonight.

Cutepenny,
Let see if I can get this right from memory.

After 1992, the mint changed the designs on the reverse on both proof and circulation strike cents. The proof changed to having a wide "AM" in America. There is a small gap between the A and the M where as the circulation strike has a close "AM" and they appear to almost touch at the bottom. So, in 1992 to present, proper proofs are wide AMs ( WAM) and circulation coins are close AMs or (CLAM) as I have seen posted.

However, there are errors. For some reason, there are examples of Close AM proofs on 1998-S and 1999-S cents. Both are rare with the 1998-S being very rare. The 1998/99 and 2000-P circulation strike cents, for some reason, had some coins struck with a proof reverse so they have wide AMs instead of the proper Close AM. The 1999-P is the rarest of these and holds good value. I believe Thad recently sold a MS-65 example that he found for over $500. The 1998 and 2000-P are much more prevalent. I have found over 25 of each roll searching and only one 1999.

The designers initials are also an indicator as on the Close AM the initials are further from the memorial that those on the Wide AM.

Clear as the Atlantic Ocean during hurricane season but I hope it helps. If you are roll searching, I recommend looking at all 1992 coins forward. you may find the first 1995.

Best of luck looking
Jim

Wrapping up my first box of cents... should have some details to post tomorrow on it. Mainly sorted by decade for now, going to start to compare dates now and start filling my Lincoln Cent album with the prettiest and glance for any errors I can see. 1 plastic cent and 4 Canadian were the only non Lincoln's.

Just getting back into collecting and after looking at this topic on the forum I decided to start searching rolls. I bought my first $5 worth yesterday from a local store. Nothing really exciting in them but it is fun to go through them. I kept all the copper ones and any 09's I found. Still need to educate myself on errors and variations. Now I need to get a local bank account so I can start really looking.

So, my first ever box, which was cents:

26 Wheaties, (1930D, 42, 3-44, 45D, 2-46 (one looks like someone tried to cut it in half with scissors and failed), 48, 49S, the rest were in the 50's. One is hard to read, looks like one might be 1910 or 1918 but its faded enough to be too hard to call. Need a magnifier to be sure or may be too faded to ever be usable.

1 plastic penny
4 Canadian (55, 66, 69, and a 67 I'm assuming says 1867-1967 with a bird instead of leafs)

I just finished up my first 20 rolls. I found 2 wheaties, 2 canadians, and a couple real nice shield "d" pennies. No "p" pennies to be found.

Breakdown
about 30% copper
1920 G4-G8
1944 G8-F12
1967 Canadian
1969 Canadian
(3) 2010 "D" Shields MS+
Also found a real nice AU 1974 "D"

Was alot of fun going through all the coins. I think I will pick up some more.

Mine's a plastic cent, says CCA play money on it but resembles a real Lincoln Cent otherwise. Someone thought they were cute by packing their roll with one to save a real cent I guess Probably cost them at least a cent to get the plastic cent though I bet so not sure they gaining much...
