There was something on the back like gum so I soaked it in hot water

Excellent! People get too worried about ugly, gummed up finds. I just take mine to the sink, rinse 'em with hot water and use my fingers to rub it off....you just have to on some coins to be able to read them. Works great 99% of the time!

Optical Character Recognition software, there is software that has been developed that can read the coin, date, mint mark, etc.

Sounds interesting but I enjoy the hunt too much to let a machine take over.

Looked through 5 rolls - found and 1935 which was much better than the one I already had.

Searched 10 rolls today... A few red BU's from the '70s, a '46-D wheatie, and a '20 wheatie in well circulated condition. Still, the oldest roll find to date!

I searched an entire $25 box of pennies today. Among those were nine wheats, which equates to 1 for every 278 pennies searched. I got the following: 1940-D, 1941, 1941-S, 1945, 1953-D (still had some luster), 1953-S, 1956, 1957-D, 1958. The 2009 cents are really making waves now as I found over twenty. In all, there were 647 coppers for 25.8% copper penetration. I managed to find examples of all seven varities of the 1982 cents! As well, there were three 1970-S cents and two 1974-S. If I were to assemble a set of all Lincoln cents starting from 1959 for the first time, there would be ten that weren't in the box. (1959, 1960-D LD, 1968-S, 1969-S, 1971-S, 1972-S, 1973-S, 2009-D, LP2, 2009 LP4, 2012-D)

Also only five Canadian pennies (I live in Michigan and used to get way more - you can tell people are holding onto those now)

Haha, yeah I hadnt even thought of that.
Based on the shape of that hole I think someone tried to nail it to a tree years ago.
