Cool Lincoln Roll Finds (From Bank Rolls) - Post Yours!

Worst box yet. Mostly 2010-2014s. 4 wheats and a 2015 hole filler. Also found a polish coin or.maybe Czech.o

So-so finds today. 20 wheats from another two boxes (5000 coins or a bag) and was all commons except for a 1937. However, that ebay link I posted yesterday according to tracking will be arriving today, so the best may be yet to come!

Nice finds, Kanga. Wish the 1916-D I found looked half as good as yours. Mine looks like it went through WW3 and the Zombie Apocalypse!

Nice going with those AU/BU LMR finds Rackster! I read somewhere recently that it is exceptionally difficult to assemble a full MS set of LMR's in MS66 or above because few people bothered saving nice examples. Even roll saving was petering out in the 1970's and 1980's so most new cents just went in general circulation. I hear that even many mint set examples are often disappointing in quality, which is another aspect of this problem - low quality strikes in general on LMR's from the 60's & 70's.

None of this surprises me because I am old enough to remember the hard bias many collectors had against the LMR cents back in the 1970's. The general attitude was that they were ugly junk and their mintages were too high to be worth bothering with. Only errors and rare die varieties and proofs were collected with any real enthusiasm.

It seems to me that if anyone wants to build such a high grade set of LMR's today that CRH finds are going to be an important part of that effort. MS examples seem to exist in relative abundance in penny jars stashed in millions of homes across America. As these migrate back to the banks via Coinstar machines, etc., I think this is where nice super grade examples may emerge from as collectors try to cherry pick nice examples from these old hoards.

Having considered all of this, my whole attitude towards LMR's has evolved. Instead of contempt, I have a whole new respect for these modern Lincoln's and the challenge posed by trying to assemble a set of MS66 LMR's. This is now one of my new collecting goals. Is anyone else trying to do this from CRH'ing?

After searching, I counted a total of 3797 coins. At $190.26 including shipping, I was basically paying five cents per coin. The rolls on the right are the commons from 1940-58 (no S mints or steels), and that came out to 2486 coins, or just over 65 percent of the lot. That's not too bad considering over 80 percent of the LWC mintage consisted of these coins. The four rolls in the top center are S-mints from 1940-1954. The six rolls below the visible coins are a few solid date rolls from the '30s. The roll on the left is a 1920 solid date roll. The two rolls at the top are 1918 and 1919 solid date rolls. You can see the steels on the right. At the top left are a few Indian Head cents that are visible below. The main pile of cents are arranged by date and mint. The P-mint teens form the top row (with three 1909 LWCs above them on the right). The rows below them are Teens-D, Teens-S, 20s-P, 20s-D, 20s-S, 30s-P, 30s-D, and 30s-S.
