Cool Lincoln Roll Finds (From Bank Rolls) - Post Yours!

When I recently dived back into CRH I originally planned to buy $500 boxes of half dollars to look for silver, but after extensive reading online I concluded that the overwhelming majority of the remaining silver has been picked out over the past 10 years as a result of high silver prices and everyone learning via the Internet of the bonanza to be had searching half dollar rolls.

I still think if you want silver, you'll do better with half's than with dimes or quarters, but the cash commitment is large and the volume you have to go through is very great. I concluded that I'd do better to just buy junk silver halves when silver is cheap. The time investment is so great with half's that I don't think you really "profit" from the activity. You could have made more money taking a part-time job somewhere and getting PAID for all those hours.

So, I too decided to go with cents. I never fail to find something of value to keep out of every box I search and the $25.00 that is tied up is not something I ever miss. Best of all, most people have such contempt for "pennies" these days that they do not feel that there is anything "valuable" worth searching for in penny rolls, so this keeps the general public out of the CRH for the most part, leaving the good stuff for those of us "in the know" to find. I've noticed that even many seasoned CRH'er's have an aversion to searching penny rolls because they feel there is not enough "profit" in it for them.

My own feeling is that I'm far more likely to make a big score off of a rare die variety cent searching penny rolls than I am to amass thousands of dollars of silver searching the other denominations. Indeed, the only reason I'd search other denominations these days is to seek out errors and die varieties. I'd consider silver finds to be "lagniappe" (that's Cajun for "a little something extra), but the silver would not be my main objective.

Finally, the fun factor is simply higher. There is just so much more to pull from every box of pennies. I find almost every box to be fun and rewarding. The only other denomination I might try is nickles, simply because I think it would be fun to try to assemble a complete set of Jefferson's from circulation, which has been done by CRH'er's, but it takes a number of years to accomplish.

CH - nice update and what a terrific box. That 48D has been eluding me but I haven't search cents in several weeks (except some of my copper hoard I saved for variety hunting). I'm out of nickels so back to searching the hoard.

I almost did a full box today. Nothing too great, 6 wheats and 10 CND. I did find a 1990 Hong Kong 20 cent coin which was kind of odd. I also got two dimes which happens more often than you'd think. I'm not sure why someone would put dimes in a penny roll.

Did a box yesterday. 8 Wheats, 7 common and a decent 1917. Also pulled a 1973 Counterstamp with the outline of Ohio and a Martini glass. That was cool since I'mfrom Ohio! It also got me thinking, is there a site out there documenting all the varieties of countertamps and...how exactly were they stamped back int he day without damaging or warping the coin?

I like finding the counter stamped cents. Not worth anything but they are amusing little novelties.
