I have seen several coins advertised for sell as follows "1908 I Gold Indian $5 NGC MS61". What does the I stand for?

Thanks and go easy on a newbie.

The I stands for the appearance of the devices on the coin they are Incused into the coin rather than struck up on the coin in relief .

The 1908 is the year is was struck. During that year they made Indian and Coronet types in the denomination of $5. The NGC MS61 is a grading service (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation). MS denotes'mint state' - means coin is just like it came from the mint no circulation brand new and not many marks. The higher the number the better the coin - 70 is the tops and 60 the low for MS coins. Also the coin will be in a holder (slab). It is a plastic container. You can go to their web sitwe for more info. Also you can go to Heritage Auction's web site to see pics.
Hope this helps a little.
Where did ya see them advertised?

Be very careful with Indian Head gold pieces. Prices very widely and I've seen people ask anywhere from $400 to $1,000 on coins described as per your post.

Thanks for for the information. It was very helpful. The coins in question are located at the National Gold Exchange https://www.ngegold.com. Priced at $430. I think this is a reasonable price. They are selling for much more on ebay but I have found that gold on ebay is over priced and can be purchased for much less elsewhere.

Thanks to everyone,
Jeff

Jeff, generally, that coin does not sell for more on ebay. There might some at that grade listed for more (buy it now prices, or high starting bids). Be sure you are looking at completed listings.

The grade of the coin is critical. There are coins that are graded just one point higher (62) will go for more. And the company that does the grading is important...NGC is considered one of the top three graders.

But Numistrust is not considered top tier, so you have to throw those out of the equation. For example, here's a Numistrust graded MS62 coin, that wouldn't even sell for a buy-it-now price of $375.

So, the price might be reasonable, but it is a reasonable RETAIL price.

HTH,
steve
