When grading a Morgan where do you look FIRST for signs of wear.

The locks of hair just above the ear seems like the highest point and perhaps the only point for establishing a grade between 55-60.

I see a lot of Morgans on ebay described as uncirculated but there is significant wear within this tiny area.

I cant find a HUGE pic anywhere of an absolutely pristine Morgan so I cant tell if this coin I bought today has any wear or not. It certainly has enough chatter.

I would call that an AU58. Just above the ear is where I look first.

A lot of it depends the strike too. if it not a full strike you will
not see a lot of detail in the high points. The New Orleans mint is notorious for weak strikes. and it takes looking at quite a number of them to determine a weak strike. but when you do it is kind of like a light bulb moment. At least it was for me

QFT (Quoted For Truth)

On the reverse the feathers on the eagle's brest is the highest point, and subsequently the first place to show wear, and also the first place to be victim of a weak strike. I cannot yet tell the differance (hence the Noob in the name), but I have yet to really look.

Register at https://www.ha.com and look at their archive of completed auctions. They have great photos.

If you look at the ANA grading standard. The high points to look for wear on the obverse are the hair above the brow, the top of the eye, tip of the cap, the hair above the ear, and the flowers in her cap. On the reverse look at the breast feathers but look for the strike too. New Orleans and some Phillies are weak. The prime focal areas are the cheek and the fields in front of the face and the central area from the breast outward on the eagle. Secondary are the cap and date area. Those are ANA but I think PCGS and NGC do it a little different but not by much. If I had time I would put up a pic. i'll see if I can photoshop it tonight

I'll quote from the ANA grading standards book:

"AU58 - Has some signs of wear: Liberty's hair above eye and ear, edges of cotton leaves and bolls, high upper fold of cap; high points of eagle's breast and tops of legs. Weakly struck spots are common and should not be confused with actual wear.
AU55- Slight trace of wear shows on hair above ear, eye, edges of cotton leaves, and high upper fold of cap. Luster is fading from cheek. Slight trace of wear shows on breast, tops of legs, and talons. Most of mint lustre is still present although marred by light bagmarks and surface abrasions.
AU50- Traces of wear show on hair above eye, ear, edges of cotton leaves, and high upper fold of cap. Partial detail is visible on tops of cotton bolls. Luster is gone from cheek. There are traces of wear on eagle's breast, tops of legs, wing tips, and talons. 3/4 of mint luster is still present. Surface abrasions and bagmarks are more noticeable than for AU55."

As for your coin, I'm not sure I see ANY signs of wear. Maybe under certain lighting and held at certain angles some "rub" will show, but I'll bet this doesn't drop any lower than AU 58.

This is a very common date, very nice condition,AS far as I can see there is wear above the ear, and below the ear, very common spots to go 1st (wear), I also see it is a very near date, possible VAM 13, in all I can not see if there is a die chip at the top of the 2nd 8, inside the upper loop?
This is a overall nice coin, I would agree this to be at least an AU 55-58, JUST MY OPINION...
