hmm... I can't find a past topic on this so here it is!

I have a few coins that I would like to send to be encapsulated by NGC, PCGS, and the other of the big 3. How can I submit them? And what should I submit? I have a lot of Chinese Junk and Big-Headed (Yuan Shikai) coins and mostly other silvers and golds that I want to submit, but then there are the Ikes...

Any help here?

And also, can you guys give me a ballpark price on the cost of getting these graded? And who should I submit the coins to?

Thanks!

I'll leave this one to the experts but will make one comment.

I prefer PCGS and know TPG is expensive and risky dollar wise. Figure about $20 per coin plus shipping and insurance both ways.

I know nothing about foreign coins so I will only comment on the Ikes. Unless they are very high grade, I personally would not bother. The slab cost to coin value ratio would not make it worth it. PCGS and NGC are both very respectable TPG's although they are not the cheapest. Expect $20-$30 per coin and approx. a 30 day turn. Any PCGS authorized dealer can submit them for you or join the PCGS collectors club and do it your self. If you belong to the ANA, I believe NGC is direct submissions as well.

Well, mainly I want to just get it packaged and put a premium on it, but I guess it's just better sticking to air-tites...

Coin World makes great slabs that I prefer over Air-Tites. You can make your labels for them and they're quality made items.

For about $5 each you can get them from Amos Advantage: http://www.amosadvantage.com/scotto...#043;holders or ebay surely has some for sale.

Don't waste your money grading a coin unless they are worth at least $100 or you're sure the grade is so high it will be a "top-pop"...just my opinion.

PCGS and NGC require you to jump through some hoops in order to submit coins. By far, the easist and cheapest thing to do is befriend a local dealer and have him submit them for you. My dealer does my coins for me and only charges me $25 (NGC). He got my 1909S VDB graded for me for $25....it would have been a LOT more if I did it myself.

As Tad said the easiest way is to just have a dealer do it for you. Not necessarily the cheapest, but the easiest. If you go to the PCGS web site you can join their forum free and ask them there. Not sure if they still do this but there used to be a system there where if you joined their grading service for grading coins, there was a yearly membership fee. However, this would entitle you to a cetain amount of slabs to be done free. Like I said, not sure if they still have that. It's a tuff web site also. They have over 28,000 active members so when you ask a question and it isn't answered within a few hours, it will vanish to page 2 or 4 or 97 or something.
I've asked a question there once and the next day it was on page 24.

The price per coin will vary...

NGC can be as low as $12.50 to $16, depending on the coin. With ANA membership, you can submit directly to them. And then there's the forms, and the 5 coin minimum.

So, you could just have a dealer do the dirty work for you. :)
