What do you think of this 1829 Capped Bust 10C? Is the black field due to the low angle light source, or is it black because of toning?
The seller doesn't accept returns so that's a definite negative.
My guess for grade would be VF35-XF40.

Looks like circulation cameo toning, and I'd lean towards XF-40. That scratch would be tiny on a dime, and I'm not sure it would detail the coin. More important is whether it would bother you.

I'm still trying to learn this series myself. I don't ever see it pulling an XF. Might be a little too nice for an F, but maybe the grader is grumpy that day.

VF35-XF40 sounds right, but possibly Details. I actually see two scratches on the bust that look like they meet/ intersect. Second one being lower in the hair. I'd be worried they cross into the fields, but can't make it out from these pics.

Very difficult to perceive what sort of surface condition may be hiding under the patina, especially under the Mylar film as well.
Therefore, my opinion can only be a guesstimate.
VF-35.

I would really prefer to examine this one in hand with a 10x jeweler's loupe, just as the TPGraders do.
That is why is is always essential that you learn to grade for yourself.
Nevertheless, grading threads as this one is should remain an essential feature of the CCF, so that we can all sharpen our grading skills.

I just can't see this apparent head scratch well enough to verify. Pass.

i dont think the coin was cleaned and pretty much impossible to determine any surface issue with these photos. I would grade it on the upper end of VF35. pretty certain that that scratch would details the coin
