Its hard to tell from the scanned image, but it looks to have EF details and has been cleaned. At least I think I'm seeing hairlines from cleaning and I would expect a darker steel gray toning on a coin that old in EF condition. Do you think the picture is a fair (accurate) representation of the coin in hand?

Its not scanned images, closer view is by a QX5, and the other is my sony camera. Yes, I do think the picture is a fair representation of the coin-in-hand. I guess I'm still having difficulty recognising cleaned coins.

Run the QX5 up to 60x. You'll see immediately whether it's a cleaned coin or not. At 200x, you can tell whether it's been dipped or not, as long as you have reference coins to see what an undipped surface should look like.

The scroll edges look too worn for an EF detail grade. I see VF details but harshly cleaned.

VF-30 cleaned !! net VG-10 for value.

Shatsi Mind telling us where you aquired this coin ?

and at what grade was it sold !! from your statement I'm assuming that the cleaning was not disclosed to you prior to purchase.

My first numismatic mistake, I feel lousy. Bought it off ebay, seller 'justcents'. Did not specify a grade or that it was cleaned. Bought this coin and a Liberty nickel from him but returned the nickel as it didn't look right to me. I usually post here as soon as I receive something so I can return on time but for some reason I didn't do the same for this. These are the auction photos.

Hi Shatsi

The auction photos are definitely misleading !! the lighting and angle do not show the cleaning.

Put the coin in a prominent spot where it can be referenced for harsh cleaning, utilize it as a learning aide,,

Dont let it get you down !!

VERY misleading. I'll be sure to put this seller on my blacklist. There is no way that he could have had this coin in hand and not known it was cleaned.

Sorry you got taken. Hopefully, this lesson wasn't an expensive one.
