There is a terrible gash threw the top of liberty's hair and "Under" her crown?

How is it possible? Damage, and silver is a relatively soft metal.

The image of LIBERTY makes the lettering appear to be in relief, but they are actually incuse which is why in the image the gash appear to go underneath the lettering. The gash is actually the top surface so it doesn't damage the letters themselves.

It looks like there is no damage to the lettering in Liberty so it makes me think that the damage happened before the die punch

Did you read my comment about how the lettering in incuse? A post strike scrape across LIBERTY won't damage the lettering.
