It's impossible to say for sure, but it is surely damage.

Do you think planchet damage possiblity? It's weird how the outline of his face on the right goes right over it.

Might be a lamination. Sharp, closeups of the area might help. Struck Through Grease can produce things like that color or reflection difference from the ear to the rim. Is Tom's eye dark from a foreign substance or from shadows?

I have yet to see a lamination flaw on a modern nickel. To the lower left of his affected eye is what appears to be a gouge that has pushed metal up from the surface. This is not a Mint error.

I will post better pics later this evening. I will try to brighten the center of damaged eye. I will also look for the gouge area.

Maybe this is better. I'm not seeing the gouge though. I will try to get better ones. Is there someone I might be able to send it to and have it checked?

Thanks for the better pics. Is the black eye gunk sticky if you lightly dab at it with a piece of paper? I've opened OBW rolls of same-date nickels and found ones with bits of tar like mateials stick to a few. Tough to know where it came from though. Whatever it is, I'd say this is 2x2 worthy for saving and more study. That pennant shaped area across Tom's face, that's incuse, correct? If so, this could be a struck through.

Not sticky. Feels like a new nickle. No markings on the reverse side, and I will post a picture of the reverse when I get home. I know nobody has seen one on a newer nickel but that doesn't mean they are not out there. Inconclusive for now.

To me it looks like glue/something on the coin? (Thus the question about weight of the coin)
