I picked up this rather worn 1828 Cap and Ray 2 Real coin cheaply today
I quite liked the contrast in colour between the raised part of the design and the background
What really intrigued me was the tilted and skewed orientation of the "2R" and the "18" in the date. Image attached
Is this normal for these early Resplandores?
Any feedback from CCF members would be appreciated
The coin weighs 6.54 grams, SG evaluated as 10.21. Diameter 27mm

A bit more crudeness on the minor denominations... even from the main mint at Mexico City... is nothing unexpected.

The piece is regal (not contemporary counterfeit, if that's where you were going)... and yes, nice circ cameo look. And really, not horribly worn at all.

Thanks for the helpful response realeswatcher.

So is it fair to say that this crudeness in the lettering is more common in the smaller denominations of Spanish Colonial and early Mexican Republic coins because the minting of the "high international reputation" 8 Real coins involved much more strict quality control?

Squire Wilson I agree that the 2R looks fine. The minors are actually extremely variable in design far more so than the 8Rs.

I suspect the reason for the lower quality product was that the minor denominations were most likely considered to be a nuisance by the mint workers themselves.

Spanish Colonial mints paid the workers by the total value of coins produced not by the number of coins produced. So it stands to reason that the workers received a higher rate of pay if they were making the 8Rs. Compare the work needed to make an 8R with that of making a 1/2 reale. You need to make 16 of the minors to equal one 8R in value. Yet all of the steps needed to make an 8R were present when making 1/2Rs.
