Hi, hoping an experienced collector can tell if this coin looks real? If I posted in the wrong topic area maybe an Admin can move to the correct area. Thanks so much

Looks to be a George III half penny, AG condition to me (and from the photo it looks like a 1775 to me). To be genuine it should be between 9.2-10.8g and 28.5-30mm. Contemporary counterfeits were a common thing especially on the 1775, the details definitely look a little off from a genuine piece, but colonial coins were rife with inconsistency.

PNWType, thanks for the detailed reply. Each of the coins weighs about 8 grams and measures about 20mm but my scale and caliper are pretty basic. These coins were purchased on ebay from what I believe to be a well known and respected colonial coin collector Clem Schettino and here is the listing: 124453446768

I guess I just want to know if the coins are worth what I paid. Thanks again.

Interesting. With a 20mm diameter it is more likely a farthing (normally ~23mm, 5g). It certainly looks like it is missing some metal around the edges, hence the smaller diameter, but that doesn't explain the extra 3g. Contemporary counterfeit is seeming more likely to me, but there can still be a market for those.

For reference:

This is getting outside of my level of knowledge at this point though
