Hello all,
this quarter could get a nice grade if all these marks are die polishing marks.
is it PMD or is ist DP?
Please look carefully.
thanks, everyone

I don't see any of the "lines" going into and on the design of the coin, they appear to just be on the "field" of the coin. To me, that means just on the die, not from any "coin" polishing/cleaning

Lacks eye appeal either way, at least to me.

The devices are clean, and these are only on the fields. Looks like someone took a wire brush to the die. It will grade problem-free with PCGS, but eye appeal plays a role here...

However, you might get more "value" out of it by submitting it as an error to PCGS. It will get a decent grade and with a error comment of "excessive die polish" or something like that, and any mint state error from George VI might attract a different set of clientele who might pay enough to cover the difference that an error submission costs.

Or submit it to CCCS, but make sure you send a link to Louis to this thread - that coin should get at least a MS-63 grade or higher in an error holder.

The lines are also on the caribou's neck.
Strange coin indeed.
Are all the lines raised ?
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Looks like 90% of the lines are from excessive die polishing, but there are also some cleaning hairlines on the caribou and on the bust, possibly enough to detail it.

I think that the caribou neck is such a large/wide entity that maybe the brush or whatever used on the die got down into the recessed design of the die itself and shows "scratches".

Actually, the lines on the face look raised, too, so maybe this is all aggressive die polishing.

Die polishing in my opinion, as scratches in the field carry through the devices without affecting them. Possibly not enough carbon present in the annealing process, leading to a softer die than wanted.

Unless it's just the light reflections how is the missing design around the nose and mouth explained?

Cheers, Bill

Great example of a coin with excessive die Polish. The phenomenon is
Also known as " scribbling " and is quite widely apparent in USA Peace dollars of the
1920s , qv Peace dollar VAMS for some spectacular examples.
