I have always encourages to my kids to ask about anything on there mind so they can better understand things. No judgement, no sarcastic comments allowed. There are no stupid questions. Please everyone feel free to ask that question that has been on your mind for a while that you have been afraid to ask. About coins of course. Many we can all learn something new. I suppose I will start. Why is it that some of the listings for doubled die coins look exactly like supposed Machine Doubling? Example the 1994-P WDDR-001 Satin Finish nickel. Any answers? What about you? What's your question? I would love to hear from you! Also anyone with answers to these questions that I'm hoping come up please feel free to chime in and spread the knowledge to your fellow numismatics.

I'll be the first to ask a question that's been nagging at me. How can you tell if a 1943 LWC has an original surface? I had three in my Dansco that I knew weren't original. They were just too perfect. I purchased a Lincoln Cent folder from someone on ebay and the three 1943 LWCs in it were not quite as shiny. One of them (I think the Denver mint) was even a grey color leading me to believe at least that one has an original surface. Is there an easy way to tell?

I'm not an expert. I can't always articulate what I'm seeing or how it happened regarding this coin stuff. With research and this forum I've seen many examples and hear many opinions. Over time, you start to train your eyes on what to look for. For me it's one of those things that just takes practice. You kinda know it when you see it. A plated, buffed/polished or original 43 cent? A DDO or MD? A cleaned coin or not? A straight graded or damaged coin? However, I do have a question: Is it toned or environmental damage?

Quote:How can you tell if a 1943 LWC has an original surface? First, you have to know what an original MS steel cent looks like. I suggest buying one either raw from a reputable dealer or slabbed and authenticated. You can get NGC MS-graded examples on ebay for under $20. I would also suggest owning a "reprocessed" example. That way you have something to compare to.

Thanks grape collects, that was a very informative read. I am going to go back through some of my coins and take a second look. Now I know what I am looking for and not just what's listed on wexler's. The sky is the limit!

I have another question. What is it about Machine Doubling that makes it not a class 6 doubled die? How can I tell the difference?

Quote:How can you tell if a 1943 LWC has an original surface? Great question. I collect those 43ers. I have well over 4,000 of them. I try to sort out plated ones. I have some plated in Zinc, Chrome, Tin, Copper and not sure. I really am looking for ones plated in Gold or Silver. If done fairly well a Zinc plated one is almost impossible to tell from original. The originals are actually Zinc plated to start with so that makes it really tuff to know the difference. And I'm not sure it makes a difference if it's a replate with Zinc since it now is back to original. However if it's in an Album, why worry. No one will know.

Sorry but questions deserve their own topics so they get the exposure they deserve.
