Hello all!
Newb on this site but wanting to find out how often new doubled dies are discovered? I understand ultra modern coins are discovered with doubled dies regularly, but let's say prior to 1940. When was the last discovery DDO / DDR on a Wheat cent?

Today, yesterday and the day before that probably. Most doubled dies are so minor they're not worth mentioning

New Pre-1940 DDs? I'd say it used to be once a month on average.

The major variety sites have not been updated in months now so it's difficult to really find out the exact number. But I do know someone who is looking really closely at early wheat cents for doubled eyelids and similar minor DDs and he used to get a few listed every time they were submitted. I also found a new 1929 DDO and a 1940 DDO and got both confirmed months ago, but again Wexler's site hasn't been updated in a while.

And some of them were here first.

In the past year or so I've had pre-1940 Lincoln wheat cents listed on Variety Vista 1909 DDR, 1929-S DDO and a 1939 DDR. And that just one person and only Lincolns. Lots to discover out there. I would have had more recent additions, like around last week, but Dr. Wiles sent all the coins in my submission back noting that he isn't the attributor for CONECA anymore.
